Characters on the lower tiers simply wear the clothes, while characters higher up exude “big goth energy,” sporting clothes that have become an integral part of their personality. There are just too many characters here for us to give each one a little time in the spotlight, so for this slideshow, I’ve selected a few from each tier that I think are emblematic of what that tier brings to the table. Since goth subculture was founded in the late 1970s, it has been made evident that every TV ensemble benefits from a token goth character or two in their show. They may serve as an antagonist that galvanizes the moral compass of the group into counteracting their dark forces, or they might be a kind, gentle soul shrouded in studs and veils. Many of their outfits and catchphrases have been repeated, built upon, and sublimated into the public consciousness. It’s possible that your own person goth phase may have been inspired by some of these lovable (or deplorable) freaks.

Both Piers and the punk rock movement he’s based on reject mainstream ideas, hence why Piers is the only gym leader without a stadium or dynamaxing. He also pays groupies called Team Yell to follow Marnie around and cheer her on, which I think is just so wholesome yet kinda metal at the same time. Leelee’s take on the goth-punk look is a bit sharper, with numerous piercings, half-purple hair and tattoos here and there. Despite her general “keep away” vibe, there’s a soulful nature in her eyes.
