Other buttons let you give a thumbs up or thumbs down to a response—important feedback for Google. Beyond the basics, Google Bard has a few important features that set it apart from other chatbots. First, you’ll see that with every response, Bard also gives you two other “drafts” of the same answer. In this case, one of the drafts provided a detailed recipe of one particular meal and the other was a slightly modified version of the first draft. However, I’ve noticed that regenerating the drafts often produces very similar results.

In other words, this technology can automate the work of human raters and scale the process of rating the answers given by a large language model (like Bard). The problem with large language models is that they mimic answers, which can lead to factual errors. One employee pointed out that large language models like ChatGPT and Bard are not fact-based sources of information. Bard is an experimental Google chatbot that is powered by the LaMDA large language model. We’ve been working on an experimental conversational AI service, powered by LaMDA, that we’re calling Bard. And today, we’re taking another step forward by opening it up to trusted testers ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks.

Google will look to replicate this success with their AI model or risk losing its search influence. Google’s top revenue strategy relies on being the number-one search engine, so any rival like ChatGPT is mission-critical. Bard data is treated the same as data from most Google products—it can be manually deleted, auto-deleted, or never saved. You can access these controls from the myactivity.google.com dashboard and filter for “Bard,” or go there directly with this link. The “Bard Activity” shortcut in the left sidebar takes you to a list of past prompts, but you can’t revisit Bard’s responses.

If you’re using a Google Workspace account instead of a personal Google account, your workspace administrator must enable Google Bard for your workspace. As Google confirmed in its response, that combination is officially in the works. The company revealed the upcoming integration back in October at the launch of its Pixel 8 smartphone range. Google has kicked off the year by crowdsourcing feedback on its six-month-old Bard chatbot. How Is Google Bard Different from ChatGPT?
